Back Bay Grill Earns Wine Spectator “Award OF EXCELLENCE” For 2006

PORTLAND, Maine -- For the seventh year in a row, Back Bay Grill has earned the “Award of Excellence” from Wine Spectator magazine. The Wine Spectator Award of Excellence is granted to restaurants “That recognize a commitment to a fine wine list, with a sufficient selection of better producers along with a thematic match to the menu in both price and style.”

The wine list has more than 281 different selections totaling over 2,000 bottles, all stored in the restaurant’s climate controlled wine cellar. Back Bay Grill’s wine list carries numerous varietals from around the world with an emphasis on a wide selection of Cabernets. In addition, Back Bay Grill usually has 10 wines available by the glass.

In a review this year in the Maine Sunday Telegram restaurant critic N.L. English wrote, “The wine list here will take care of us all, from wine snobs to novices and from extravagant spenders to diners on a budget. Each section starts off cheap - one bottle is $16. It rides up to a $215 bottle of Perrier Jouet Fleur de Champagne, and higher. Meanwhile, a big selection of half bottles, which hold two almost full glasses of wine, widens the fresh selection of 16 to 20 wines offered by the glass.”

“Enjoying good food paired with a good wine enhances the dining experience,” commented Larry Matthews Jr., Owner and Executive Chef at Back Bay Grill.  “We try to make choosing wine at Back Bay Grill an easy and pleasurable experience; our staff is good at helping guests select a bottle or glass of wine with their meals.”

Back Bay Grill earned four stars in the Maine Sunday Telegram this year and was called “Portland’s Godfather of fine dining” by the Portland Phoenix in 2004. The restaurant has been featured in such prestigious publications as Art Culinaire, Down East, and the New York Times. Signature dishes include Duck Two Ways, with Seared Duck Confit and Lavender Marinated Breast, Rack of Lamb, natural Filet Mignon, and hand made pasta dishes. Back Bay Grill always offers at least one vegetarian item and places a strong emphasis on fresh, high quality ingredients and the wine list is one of the best in the state. Back Bay Grill is a member of the Maine Organic Farm Growers Association. Back Bay Grill’s menu, ambiance and decor combine to produce a truly unique dining destination.
